Working:

Pomalidomide has several ways to work against myeloma cells:
As an immunomodulatory medication, Pomalid (Pomalidomide) enhances the action of your immune system.
          ·         This medicine helps prevent the growth of blood vessels and abnormal cells.
         ·        When given with another medicine called dexamethasone, it stimulates the immune system to attack the cancer  cells and stops the formation of blood vessels supplying cancer cells.

TAKING YOUR CAPSULES

You must take tablets and capsules according to the instructions your doctor or pharmacist gives you. You should take the right dose, not more or less.
Never stop taking a cancer drug without talking to your specialist first.

To make sure pomalidomide is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:
liver disease (especially hepatitis B)
kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis)

          ·          risk factors for coronary artery disease (such as diabetes, menopause, being overweight, having high blood pressure or high cholesterol, having a family history of coronary artery disease, being older than 40 and a man, or being a woman who has had a hysterectomy).

            ·         if you smoke (smoking may make pomalidomide less effective and may increase your risk  of  a stroke or blood clot while taking this medicine).

         ·         Using pomalidomide may increase your risk of developing other types of cancer, such as leukemia or lymphoma. Talk with your doctor about your specific risk.

          ·         It is not known whether pomalidomide passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while using this medicine.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If you are more than 14 hours late, skip the missed dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

What are the symptoms and problems with myeloma?

There may be no symptoms at first in the early stages of the disease. Some people are diagnosed by chance because they have a blood test done for other reasons which may detect early myeloma. As the disease progresses, symptoms develop.
The symptoms and problems which develop are mainly due to the uncontrolled production of plasma cells in the bone marrow, and the excess amount of antibody (paraprotein) that the plasma cells make.

Fatigue, Fever, Bone pain, Muscle cramp, Diarrhoea, Nausea, Constipation, Breathing difficulty, Cough, Decreased appetite, Decreased white blood cell count (neutrophils), Low blood platelets, Decreased white blood cell count (lymphocytes), Anemia (low number of red blood cells).
